Unfortunately, the data is clear—failing to focus while driving can be lethal. According to the NHTSA, driver distraction accounts for around 10% of fatal crashes, with mobile phones playing a role in approximately 15% of those fatalities. Fatigue is more difficult to measure. However, the NHTSA estimates that approximately 90,000 police-reported crashes in 2017 involved drowsy drivers, leading to an estimated 50,000 people injured and close to 1,000 deaths. These accidents typically involve not only the occupants of the vehicle itself, but pedestrians and cyclists as well.

Numerous strategies have been deployed to help drivers stay focused—ranging from public service announcements to increased policing—with various degrees of success. However, a strategy that has emerged more recently involves the use of driver monitoring systems, often referred to as DMS systems. Installed in the cabin’s interior, these devices are designed to track driver behavior in real time, generating alerts whenever signs of distraction or fatigue are shown. In addition, related devices that monitor occupants seated in the passenger or rear seats, known as OMS systems, are also increasing in popularity. While DMS systems focus solely on the driver, OMS systems perform a variety of safety- and convenience-related functions, including customizing the seating area for comfort, tracking proper seat belt positioning, and even ensuring that small children aren’t accidentally left behind in the vehicle.

HD map platform leverages Ambarella’s CVflow®- based CV22AQ and Momenta deep learning algorithms

SHANGHAI, April 16, 2019 — Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMBA), a Santa Clara, California-based developer of high-resolution video processing and computer vision semiconductors, and Momenta, an autonomous driving technology company based in Suzhou, China, today announced a collaborative HD mapping platform for autonomous vehicles. The combined solution leverages Ambarella’s CV22AQ CVflow computer vision system-on-chip (SoC) and Momenta’s deep learning algorithms to provide HD map solutions, including mapping, localization for autonomous vehicles, and map updates through crowdsourcing.

Momenta’s vision-based HD semantic mapping solution is highly scalable and production-ready. Through crowdsourcing, the solution can create a closed feedback loop of big data, AI, and HD map updates. The CV22AQ is manufactured in an advanced 10-nanometer process, providing the ultra-low power consumption required for the design of compact automotive systems. Its CVflow architecture delivers real-time processing of up to 8 megapixel resolution video at 30 frames per second (fps) for high-precision deep learning based object recognition.

The CV22AQ’s high-performance image signal processor (ISP) delivers superior image quality in low-light environments, while high dynamic range (HDR) processing extracts more image detail in high-contrast scenes — further enhancing the system’s computer vision capabilities.

Using CV22AQ, Momenta is able to use a single monocular camera input to generate two separate video outputs, one for vision sensing (perception of lanes, traffic signs, and other objects), and another for feature point extraction for self-localization and mapping (SLAM) and optical flow algorithms.

Ambarella provides a complete set of tools to help customers easily port their neural networks to the CV22AQ SoC. Based on the tool chain, Momenta is able to quickly migrate deep learning perception models to embedded platforms and achieve an accurate output.
